Obituary:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Deborah J. Brackens, 53, formerly of Amarillo, died Tuesday, April 21, 2009.
Services were at 11 a.m. Friday, May 1, 2009 in Mount of Blessings Seventh-day Adventist Church in Amarillo with Rodney Draggon and Lawrence Brackens Sr., pastors, officiating. Burial in Llano Cemetery by Golden Gate Mortuary, 1416 N. Hughes St.
Deborah Jean Brackens was born May 20, 1955, in Amarillo to Roosevelt Lee and Delma Ray Brackens, the first of six children the Brackens family was blessed with.
Deborah spent her childhood years in Amarillo, graduating from Palo Duro High School in 1973. After graduation, she attended Oakwood College in Huntsville, Ala., where she earned an associate degree in nursing. After graduation, Deborah moved to Washington, D.C., where she attended Columbia Union College and received a Bachelor of Science in social work.
She began her professional career in nursing, working at various hospitals in the Washington, D.C., area. She began with Washington Adventist Hospital, but the majority of her time was spent in service to the community at Prince George’s Hospital Center. She demonstrated her leadership skills in several positions, including manager of the chemical dependency unit and director of staffing, scheduling and transport services. After spending nearly 30 years serving the Prince George community, Deborah moved on to serve the Northern Virginia, taking a position as director of case management at Inova Hospital in Alexandria, Va.
The only thing Deborah loved more than attending social events was attending social events that were perfect. In fact, she loved it so much, that she started her own business, Something So Right. She wanted to help create a very special occasion for all of her clients. She was an experienced event planner for weddings, birthday celebrations, employee programs and much more. She was gifted in the art of arranging and details. She had a special gift of working with people in stressful situations, creating that special event that guaranteed a lifetime of memories.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Davey Lee “Davey Baby” Brackens.
Survivors she leaves to mourn include her parents, Roosevelt Lee and Delma Ray Brackens; a brother, Roosevelt Brackens Jr.; three sisters, Alsandra Brackens, Inez Brackens and Leigh Ann Brackens; four nieces, Carlea and Daysha, both of Amarillo, and Laura Lee and Rachael, both of Aurora, Colo.; and three nephews, Jason of Aurora, Sandron of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Antonie of Amarillo. She also leaves the loves of her life, her great-nieces, Jeri’yah, A’Myah, Leigh-Leigh, Tiffanie, Brianna and Ha’esh Alexandria; and her great-nephews, Jason Alexander Jr., Antonie, David Zion and Abishai; along with a host of friends
