Greetings fellow Amarilloans! I am the son of the Late Claudine Brown Jackson Chatman, who was a 1956 graduate of Carver. She married her high school sweatheart the late Collis Wayne Jackson, who was the football captain, while she was the drum majorette and band sweetheart. She went on to graduate twice from Prarie View A&M, like her mentor Mrs. Mayes, and returned to teach Home Economics at Carver in the late 60's just like her mentor. She later took a teaching position in Cleveland, Ohio, and finished out her life and career here.

She passed in September of 2013 and as a courtesy to me, the Amarillo Globe ran a short editorial on her in mid September. I noticed she is not listed in your memorial list of former students or teachers, but wanted you to know that she so enjoyed coming to the reunions every two years until she could no longer. Here is a link to her FindaGrave.com obituary:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=120179479

Thank You for keeping the rich legacy of what I consider to be Amarillo's Premier African American institution alive! Forever a Golden Dragon offspring!

The CGDA Basketball Shoot Out was absolutely magnificnt and I loved it. I would be more then pleased to host the event at the Y any time this event is scheduled. I love working with the kids and believes that the kids really enjoyed themselves, and had loads of fun. They were happy to receive the certificates, the trophies, and the ribbons. An even bigger hit was the raffle, in which two lucky kids won an autographed WNBA basketball from the Tulsa Shock and an autographed footbal from the NFL Dallas Cowboys organization. It is indeed an occasion the kids will never forget. Finally, I feel that CGDA is doing a wonderful thing in recognizing these kids.

I had Fun at the Reunion...KUDOS to the planners and the attendees...I want to say thank you to the Amarillo Community for embracing the activities and the fun events at the reunion. My favorite was the parade and how genuinely happy and well received everything was for our people of Amarillo . I'm inspired to make a difference just based on the need in our community.....This spirit of caring can be instrumental in local efforts there in Amarillo and I will communicate and collaborate some ideas if anyone would, could, and should feel the need to give back.  There are so many opportunities in our city for growth starting with the mindsets of the people who live there....The reunion is only one vehicle that can drive change and innovation...we all can make a mark...Thank you Amarillo for the inspiration

Hello everyone...I just want to say it was such a joy to see so many people that I've known all of my life.  I didn't make it to Carver...for I was transferred at the end of my 4th grade year at North Heights to Emerson and then on to Horace Mann...but my brother "Ronnie Smith" was a Dragon. But...I just want to say it sure was nice to see so many of you...somr of you it has been many years.I do hope I will see you all again very soon. Lot's of love to all of you.The memories will never fade. Lots of hugs and kisses.

Hello Fellow Dragons,

If you have not heard, Judy and Johnny Turner are seeking a "Write Your History" from all of us by August 15 to help begin the process of documenting the history of Carver Jr/Sr High from its beginnings at Patten and Douglas, through its closure in 1967.  Start asking questions of anyone you know who attended this year's reunion and make sure you get a copy of the form, fill it out, and return to Judy and Johnny by August 15, 2012.  Don't be left out of this important historic moment for our Dragon Family.  Love you guys.

My name is Michael Collins and I left Amarillo in 1968 after I finished 6th grade at Hilltop. I grew up on Hughes street. Although I didn't get a chance to attend Carver High School that was my dream. My older sister Gwen Calhoun graduated from Carver. As a child I loved Amarillo, Hilltop, Carver and most of all football.  I wanted to be a Dragon so bad. I grew up watching Shanklin and my sister's boy friend Darnell Owens play in that blue and gold. I now live in Springfield, Illinois. Haven't been back since then but I consider myself a Dragon.

Golden Dragon Staff,
I was directed to the Golden Dragon site by Judy Turner class of 67. Even though I never attended Carver, I have attended reunions in the past and enjoyed each one of them. I have been overseas for a few years and really enjoy going on line and receiving information on the great things the group is doing in the community. Now that I have access to this site I can plan a trip back home and enjoy some of the festivities. The site is impressive and interesting. Good to see the Dragon spirit is being kept alive.

Sincerely,

It is really great to see the list of all the people I attended Carver with.  I am currently living in Katy, Texas, a suburb outside of Houston.  I have been receiving the information on the Carver Dragons for a couple of years via my brother, Glen.  I have not attended any of the events put on by the Association in the past ,but I will definitely try in the future.

Please continue your outstanding work at updating this website so I CAN make plans to see as many of you as I can in the future.

I am so excited about what the association is trying to do to revive Amarillo and reconnect with the community.   You know God has His own way of doing things and as Roman 8:28, "it is for our good."   Tap and I will try to make the next reunion if travel permits.   BE ENCOURAGED!

A few weeks ago I was sitting at my desk in deep thought about Amarillo, Caver High, classmates and people  I've not seen since 1965, thats been along time ago but I still have a strong memory that brings back Hilltop Elem. North Hieghts Elem,Caver Jr. High, NW 19th st. and 90% of the people and Educators that were involved in my life then. I called my brother Franklin Dawson and we talked for awhile about some of the people and things that I had read about on the site This has warmed my heart and  made me happy to know that the legend of Carver High it's educators and students of  Carver communicate, live on and tell the story, at the same time it makes me sad to learn of  friends we.ve lost. I would have been in the class of 69 had I'd stayed in Amarillo
I graduated from Atlanta High in Atlanta Tx in 1969 .Attendended
Bishop Collage and I now reside in Abilene Tx. I would like to here from some of the class of 69 or anyone that might remeber me. May God bless and keep all of you.

Hello, all especially those from the class of "68". The past reunion was fun. I was however looking to party harder than I did. It is my understanding that the parties during the Juneteeth celebration are the best. Anyway, I look forward to more time there in Texas, "My home on the range". I am looking for several classmembers and am hoping someone will email me and help me out.

Hello Carver Dragons
The last time I was in Amarillo for a reunion was 1987 when my youngest daughter was less than a year old. Since that time, I have become a grandmother 8 times (by my son who has five, my stepdaughter has 2 and my youngest has one 3 month old daughter. I have been in Denver since 1968 and had many ups and downs, but but the Grace of God and I happy and have a wonderful life. My mother Greta Blackburn (who passed away 1n 1986 when I was 4 months pregnant with my youngest child) taught at Carver for many years and I have fond mmemories of Hilltop, Carver, the dances at the Y on Friday nights  and parties at Della Roger's house with her mom partying right along with us. I was reading the" in memory of "section and was  saddened to learn of so many of my classmates who have passed on. I do keep in touch with some fellow Carver dragons, like Della Roger, John Allen Jr, Andrinee, Cheryle and Jimmy Hilliard. I used to talk to Debra Jackson and Paul Whitaker a few years ago.  My new son-in law 's father lived in Amarillo for a while.Anyway I will try to make it to the next reunion, God willing. I would love to hear from any of my classmates (class of 1970).

By chance, I found this great website and read the names of many people whom I have known.  I only spent one year of my academic life at Carver Junior High School-- but it was critical in shaping my life for service as a physician. Hello Fellow Carver Dragons

I just wanted to drop another few lines to say hey to you. The last 2 months have brought several milestones in my life, I turned 57 on April 11, celebrated 25 years of marriage on April 21 and marked 20 years at my current job on May 8. Denver has been my home since I left Amarillo in August of 1968 but Amarillo is still where my heart is. Wish I could make the reunion this year but time and obligations won't allow. I am the proud parent of 3 great grown kids and 8 grandkids and they  and my husband all keep me grounded and let me know my life is blessed.  I wish to hear from any former Carver Dragon. I keep in touch with Della Rogers and just recently heard form Doris Lax.  Edith Randon, if you are out there, please contact me. Take care all and stay strong and keep your faiith in God and your family and friends and yourselves.

I didn't attend Carver, but all my friends from Amarillo did, and with that I"m always in the "know".  I love the website, great job! It's awesome.  I hope to see everyone for Carver Reunion.  So nice to keep in touch with folks from Amarillo that I haven't seen or heard from in years.  Hey for all of you in H-town area, hit me up on lainey077@att.net, would love to hear from you.  I'm on the northwest side.

This is really a wonderful website.  I was informed of it by Ray who fond me on Facebook and I was truly impressed.  It is a pleasure to read your thoughts and  compliments to each other and  to find out where people are and what they are doing.  I wasn't a Carver student but living in Amarillo you still knew the people. I hope to come to the reunion and enjoy the gathering of good people   Thank you Ray and Bonita

Congratulations on this wonderful website.  Fred Lindsey shared the site with me and I am impressed to see that Carver and it's rich history is making a statement.  I did not attend Carver but I have an older brother and sister who did.  My brother Eddie Dunn was part of the basketball team and we loved watching them play.  Those were true basketball giants that paved the way for our players today.  I remember so many times after their practice, the guys would come to our house and I would have to cook for them.  The good old days were great!

May God bless you all as you move forward in sharing information and keeping us all aware and moving onward and upward.

Congratulations Carver Dragons!  I heard about this site too late to attend the upcoming celebration but I plan on attending future events.  It is really good to see so many good things come out of Amarillo (where I had teachers @ PD tell me I would only be a bus boy - I still laugh at that).  During my next speaking engagement near by, I\'ll stop by and say hello.

Again the Association has out done themselves . Great Job. I was to happy to be able to help regardless to how little. Ray take lots of photo\'s for me. It looks as if I will not be able to attend this reunion due to trama I recieved from a car accident in 2005. I have had eight surgeries with the last one in Dec. 2009, so I thought. So I am looking at a hip replacement sometime this month. I only asked for your prayers for a quick recovery. I wanted so much to see everyone and be on the home grounds. My best friend. Maryann Pipkins-Randalls is here visiting for a month. I will so not like it  when she has to leave. We have been best friends since the second grade. She is my sister more than a friend.

Hello CGDA and all members, I just wanted to say that I am very "Happy" to see how you all have worked to keep us all informed about "The Rillo" and your hard work is very much "Appreciated. It gives me "Great Joy" to see all "Associations" realize we need each other to continue "Patton, Dragons and Geckos be recognized as "One". Patton Carver is about all "African Americans" who walked through that school and their "Family" members who were not so fortunate to enjoy the feeling. The Reunion is about "Educating" our younger generation about what struggles were absorbed to have that school belong to "US" in north amarillo. No matter what is said about what Carver was about"We All Paid A Major Price" to have that school taken from us and we all know why. As we all know the slogan from the opposition ( you already know the words) We can\'t beat them so we need to get them here with us. A very sad day for us all, but as we all see there was "Excellent Teaching" from our "Professors" Male and Female and there are some very "Intelligent" Individuals from those streets in the "Rillo. Keep up the good work on keeping us together and we will only get "Better And Stronger" as we proceed forward, I Love Our Direction.
Much Love,
Charles Bates aka CB.

This is wishing everyone a very Happy New Year and although I went to Carver for only one year, I still feel that I am apart of the rich heritage that it had to offer. Coming from a family of brothers and sisters that attended Carver makes me very proud to say that I went their for a short time. Since I have been reading this website, I have really been blessed in seeing how everyone that I know has grown in so many ways. I thank my cousin Bonita Reynolds and the rest of the people responsible for the website for stepping up and taking on this challenge to keeping so many people informed. It is reunion time again for Carver and also for my family reunion. I am looking forward to coming home to celebrate the both of them. Dragons,
Do you remember the School Song?
We will al-ways be singing of our happy high school days, with our glad-voi-ces ring-ing in ev-er end-ing praise.  Then, here's to our Dear Carver High, may her name for-ever stand to guide the youth of the land.  We'll be loyal, true and faithful, we will rally to our school-- We'll be loy-al, true and faith-ful to Carver High School.  We are climbing still high with our teachers by our sides.  They will lead us on to victory if we in them con-fine.  Then, here's to our Dear Carver High, may her name for-ever stand to guide the youth of the land.  We'll be loyal, true and faithful, we will rally to our school--. We'll be loyal true and faith-ful to Carver High School.

You have worked very hard to make this site an awesome connection for people who desire to remember the past such as our school days that can be so easily forgotten. Keep the faith and keep up the hard work. I enjoyed seeing pictures from when I attended in 2006. This site brings joy to my eyes and heart because I did enjoy being back in Amarillo.
