Artie Mae Griffin, 85, of Amarillo died Monday, June 23, 2008.

Services were at 2:30 p.m. Saturday June 28, 2008 in Jenkins Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Darrel Fincher officiating. Burial in Llano Cemetery by Warford-Walker Mortuary, 509 N. Hughes St.


Mrs. Griffin was born Nov. 29, 1922, in Gilmer to David and Mary F. Craig. She had been a resident of Amarillo for 65 years.


For many years, she was employed by the Bronco Lodge and Holiday Inn. She was later employed by the Jim Hedgecoke family and helped rear their children.


She retired at the age of 70 and began assisting the aged by taking them to doctor appointments, grocery shopping and elsewhere.


As a very young widow, she reared six girls without welfare assistance, which she refused.


She was a member of Jenkins Chapel Baptist Church and enjoyed playing cards.


She lost her home and belongings to a house fire in March and became a resident of a nursing home.


She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Albert Don Griffin; and two daughters, Bessie Mae Crain and Ethel Jean Monroe.


Survivors include four daughters, Johnnie Delores Robinson and husband Jonathan of Borger, Bobbie Griffin of Hayward, Calif., Georgetta Cook of San Jose, Calif., and Stephanie Gilbreath of Amarillo; a sister, Mae Della Bradley of Amarillo; a brother, David Craig; 11 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
